UMCH Foster Care Services - Alabama & West Florida

The United Methodist Children’s Home is very proud of the growing number of families who partner with us to provide care for children in their homes. Working from Alabama offices in Tuscaloosa, Dothan, and Andalusia, and from our Milton office in Florida, we serve 37 counties.

Our foster care program has five major parts:

  • Foster Parent Training
  • Foster Home Licensure and Approval
  • Placement of Children
  • Supervision of Children in Care
  • Respite

All of our programs are currently recruiting families who are interested in finding out more about foster care. Join this team of special people opening up their hearts and homes to care for children.

You can become a foster parent if you are at least 25 years old and can provide a safe environment for a child or children. Your home will be assessed to make sure it is in compliance with the Alabama Minimum Standards for foster Family Homes. All members of your household must have medical clearances and all adults in the home must be willing to undergo criminal history background checks.

Making the call is the first step towards becoming a foster parent. You can sign up for a free 10-week course that will introduce you to foster parenting and help you decide if it is really right for you. Once you complete the course, other training, applications and evaluations are required to become certified. You do not have to commit to enroll in the course. We recommend that you wait until you’ve attended the course before making the decision on fostering.

  • Areas of Service

    Therapeutic Foster Care

(Each office in the following locations serves a multi-county area: Andalusia, Dothan, and Tuscaloosa)

This program serves children whose special needs cannot be met through less restrictive foster care resources. We help children and youth who have social maladjustment, emotional and/or behavior problems and who are unable to live with their biological families.

Each therapeutic foster family serves only one child at a time unless that child is part of a sibling group. The foster parents receive 40 hours of pre-service training and 24 continuing education hours annually to prepare them for handling the severe emotional and behavioral difficulties that these children experience.

    Traditional Foster Care

(The office in Milton, Florida, serves a multi-county area)

All of our foster care programs recruit, train, and support foster families. These dedicated families give temporary homes to children who are unable to live with their own families due to different situations.

    Enhanced Foster Care

(Each office in the following locations serves a multi-county area: Andalusia, Dothan, Tuscaloosa)

This program is for sibling groups of four or more. We train these parents just as we do therapeutic families. This program provides private homes for groups of siblings who are unable to live with their own families.

    Respite Care

Providing short-term care to children in foster care. Each stay ranges from one weekend to two weeks. Each stay is well planned and provides support to other foster families.
